Samsung Developing In-House Raytracing and AI Upsampling Tech for Future Exynos Processors

Samsung is reportedly working on in-house raytracing and AI-powered upsampling technologies for future Exynos processors, separate from its collaborations with AMD and Qualcomm. These technologies, known as Neural Ray Reconstruction and Neural Super Sampling, are expected to be integrated into Exynos chips after 2025. While this news has surfaced shortly after Samsung's partnership with AMD and Qualcomm to bring FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) to its phones, these gaming technologies may not be incorporated into Samsung's upcoming 3nm 'Dream Chip' developed for the Galaxy S25 series.

Samsung's raytracing technology is claimed to outperform AMD and Nvidia solutions by offering raytracing across the entirety of a scene, as opposed to the selective application of raytracing by AMD and Nvidia primarily in parts of a game's frame where light is reflected.

Given that raytracing necessitates substantial processing power, Samsung employs a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for raytracing-related computations and utilizes AI-driven super-sampling (Neural Super Sampling). This technique involves rendering frames at a lower resolution and subsequently upscaling them to a higher resolution to reduce the computational load on the chipset. Following this process, anti-aliasing is applied to enhance the smoothness of object edges in video frames.

It's important to note that there has been no official announcement from Samsung regarding these technologies, so it's advisable to approach this information with some caution.


In the near future, Samsung plans to launch the Galaxy S24 in mid-January 2024, marking its first AI Phone. The device will be equipped with the Exynos 2400 or Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, featuring a potent Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of on-device AI processing, reducing reliance on cloud servers for offloading tasks. This approach is expected to enhance the speed and reliability of certain tasks. Furthermore, Samsung aims to evolve the NPU to handle raytracing and upsampling tasks in future Galaxy smartphones.
