Reports are emerging of a widespread outage affecting several of Meta's top social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Users attempting to access these platforms are encountering error messages, such as "something went wrong," or being directed to a logged-out landing page despite providing correct login credentials.
The disruption appears to have commenced sometime after 10 AM ET on Tuesday, with numerous reports surfacing on social media and user-submitted issue tracking platforms like DownDetector. While Meta's official status page primarily reflects issues related to its business products, not its entire platform, Meta communications director Andy Stone has acknowledged the outage, stating, "We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now."
Given the scale and redundancy measures inherent in Meta's network, such a widespread outage is highly unusual, prompting speculation about its underlying cause. The timing of the outage, coinciding with election day across multiple U.S. states, has raised eyebrows, particularly as millions of voters head to the polls for Super Tuesday primaries. This outage presents significant challenges for candidates and political organizations relying on Meta's platforms for last-minute voter outreach and reminders.
Meta's suite of apps has played a pivotal role during election cycles, boasting nearly 4 billion monthly active users as of the end of last year. To mitigate concerns about its potential impact on election outcomes, Meta has implemented measures such as disabling political ads leading up to key elections, like the U.S. midterms. Additionally, Meta announced plans to label political ads with AI-generated imagery for the 2024 election cycle to address emerging concerns surrounding misinformation and influence.
Apart from Meta platforms other services like Google, Google Play, YouTube, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Gmail, Valorant, Discord,Yahoo, Yahoo Mail, Airtel, Jio, Vi (Vodafone Idea), Telegram, SBI, AWS (Amazon Web Services), Cloudflare, TikTok and more.
