Apple Reportedly Developing Second-Generation Mixed-Reality Vision Pro Headset

Apple is reportedly in the early stages of developing the second generation of its mixed-reality Vision Pro headset, following the delay in the launch of the first generation to March 2023. According to sources, the second-generation lineup will consist of four models, including one targeting the high-end market. The remaining headsets will offer a mix of features at a more affordable price point. The Bill of Materials (BoM) for the cost-effective version is expected to be only 50% of that required for the first generation. Sampling for the second generation is scheduled for the second quarter of 2024, potentially leading to a launch in the second half of 2025.

The first generation's launch was reportedly postponed to March 2023 due to manufacturing difficulties related to the headset's complex internal design. Apple analyst Mark Gurman mentioned in his Power On newsletter that the company needs more time for distribution plans and further testing. The initial production forecast for the Apple Vision Pro headset has seen significant cuts, with fewer than 400,000 units expected in 2024.

The initial launch will focus on the US market, gradually expanding to other regions, with a global launch anticipated by the end of the year. In addition to the Vision Pro lineup, Apple is also said to be planning AR glasses similar to Meta's Smart Glasses, introduced earlier this year.
