Linktree, the popular “link-in-bio” tool used by millions of creators, suddenly went dark in India last week — and nobody can say exactly why.

Across major ISPs including Jio, ACT Fibernet, Tikona, and Asianet, the service has been throwing SSL errors or failing to connect altogether. Some users even saw messages suggesting it had been blocked at a government level.

The blackout matters because India is one of Linktree’s top markets: in July alone the service logged around 7.3 million visits from India, making up 3.5% of its global traffic. Influencers, small businesses, and even political groups rely on it to funnel audiences toward shops, campaigns, or content.

But neither side is offering clarity. Linktree says it’s aware of the outage and investigating, while stressing that no Indian authority has contacted them about a block. The Ministry of Electronics and IT told reporters it had issued no such directive, and the Department of Telecommunications declined comment.

That leaves creators caught in the middle. With their traffic and monetization pipelines disrupted, many are scrambling to migrate to alternative link-in-bio platforms or cobble together DIY solutions.

The ambiguity highlights a broader pattern in India’s internet governance: services can vanish from the web with little explanation, leaving both users and platforms guessing. Until Linktree or regulators provide answers, millions of Indian creators remain in limbo.
