Epic and Spotify Test Apple's New App Store Rules as Court Battle Over Fees Intensifies

Epic Games and Spotify are actively testing Apple's revised App Store rules in the U.S., following a recent federal court ruling that mandates Apple to allow developers to direct users to external payment options without imposing additional fees.

Epic Games: Fortnite's Return to iOS

Epic Games has submitted Fortnite to the U.S. App Store, marking its potential return after being removed in 2020 due to disputes over in-app payment systems. The company plans to utilize its EU-based developer account to reintroduce Fortnite, capitalizing on the court's decision that prohibits Apple from collecting commissions on external purchases. Epic's CEO, Tim Sweeney, emphasized the significance of this move, highlighting the broader impact on developers' ability to offer alternative payment methods without incurring Apple's traditional fees.

Spotify: Expanding Audiobook Purchases

Spotify is preparing an update to its iOS app that will enable U.S. users to purchase audiobooks through external links, including options for Premium users to buy additional listening time. This development follows the court's ruling, which found Apple in violation of a 2021 injunction and mandated the cessation of up to 27% commissions on external purchases. Spotify has already begun offering subscriptions via external links and aims to extend this to audiobook sales, enhancing user access to content and reducing unnecessary fees.

Apple's Response and Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Apple has filed an emergency motion seeking to delay the enforcement of the court's order, arguing that the mandated changes could cause "serious and irreparable harm" to its business model and the integrity of the iOS ecosystem. The company contends that the new rules could undermine user trust and disrupt the App Store's operations. Despite complying with the order thus far, Apple plans to appeal the ruling, maintaining that its commission structures are essential for sustaining the App Store's services and security.

As these developments unfold, the actions of Epic Games and Spotify may set precedents for other developers seeking to navigate and potentially benefit from the evolving App Store policies.
