BYD, a leading Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has unveiled a groundbreaking charging technology capable of adding 400 kilometers (approximately 250 miles) of range in just five minutes. This "Super e-Platform" achieves a peak charging rate of 1,000 kW, effectively doubling the speed of Tesla's upcoming 500 kW V4 Superchargers.

The new charging system will debut in BYD's upcoming Han L sedan and Tang L SUV models, both set to launch in April 2025, with starting prices around $37,330. To support this innovation, BYD plans to install over 4,000 ultra-fast chargers across China, though specific timelines for this infrastructure rollout have not been disclosed.

This advancement addresses common concerns about EV charging times, bringing the experience closer to the convenience of refueling traditional gasoline vehicles. The announcement has positively impacted BYD's market performance, with shares rising by 4% following the news.

This development intensifies the competition in the EV market, particularly challenging Tesla's position, as BYD continues to innovate and expand its technological capabilities.
