Samsung is set to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold6 tomorrow at its grand Unpacked event in Paris. For a while, there have been rumors about a Galaxy Z Fold6 Ultra (also referred to as Z Fold6 Slim), which was supposed to arrive with a thinner body. Today, a new rumor claims that the Fold6 Ultra project is on hold indefinitely. This Ultra version was expected to feature a thinner build and larger screens than the standard Fold6.

Despite the indefinite hold on the Fold6 Ultra project, this does not mean the Ultra will never be released; it just indicates that Samsung currently does not have a launch planned for it, assuming the rumor is accurate.
Honor, with its Magic V3, and Xiaomi, with its Mix Fold 4, are competing this month for the title of the world's thinnest foldable smartphone. The Honor Magic V2 has held this title since last year. Samsung, on the other hand, does not have a contender in this particular race for the thinnest foldable. The Ultra could have been Samsung's entry into the thin foldable genre, but perhaps it was not thin enough, which might be why the project is on hold.
Samsung has long enjoyed a comfortable lead in the foldable market share, but this lead has recently declined. The Galaxy Z Fold6, with its incremental updates, might not be sufficient to regain its market dominance, especially considering the aggressive hardware innovation from Chinese manufacturers. Samsung’s minor updates to the Z Fold6 might not be the action needed to counteract the decline in its market share.
The anticipated launch tomorrow will reveal the extent of improvements and new features in the Galaxy Z Fold6. However, if the Ultra model's indefinite hold and the intense competition from Chinese manufacturers are any indications, Samsung may need to rethink its strategy to maintain its position as a leader in the foldable smartphone market.
