Apple plans to split Apple Intelligence into two tiers: a free version with limited capabilities and a paid version, likely named Apple Intelligence+

Apple has recently introduced its new suite of AI features, called Apple Intelligence, during the WWDC 2024 event. This innovative suite is currently available at no cost across iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. However, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this free access will not be permanent. In the future, Apple plans to split Apple Intelligence into two tiers: a free version with limited capabilities and a paid version, likely named Apple Intelligence+, which will offer the full suite of AI features.

Gurman suggests that Apple will likely generate substantial revenue from these paid AI services, potentially surpassing the profits from device sales. This shift in focus underscores Apple's strategic move towards monetizing software and services. In addition, Apple plans to claim a portion of subscription revenue from AI partners integrating their services into Apple devices, further boosting its income from these services.

Initially, Apple Intelligence will be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Future devices, including the iPhone 16 series, as well as Macs and iPads with M-series chips, are also expected to support these AI features. Additionally, Apple aims to extend AI functionalities to its Vision Pro mixed reality headset, though this integration presents unique challenges. Reimagining AI features for the mixed reality environment, as opposed to traditional displays on MacBooks or iPhones, is a complex task that Apple is carefully navigating.

Apple Intelligence offers a variety of functionalities designed to enhance user experience across Apple’s ecosystem. On iPhones, for instance, it can prioritize notifications based on their importance. It also includes advanced writing tools capable of summarizing content, correcting text, and providing suggestions. The 'Image Playground' feature allows users to generate images based on prompts, similar to Meta AI’s capabilities.

Beyond these, Apple Intelligence can perform actions on behalf of the user. For example, it can open specific files or play audio from podcasts sent by contacts. This contextual awareness allows it to respond intelligently to user commands, adding a layer of convenience and efficiency to device interactions.

As Apple transitions towards offering a paid tier for its AI services, it highlights the company's commitment to enhancing user experience through advanced technology while also exploring new revenue streams. This strategic pivot to prioritizing software and service income aligns with broader industry trends and reflects Apple's ongoing innovation in artificial intelligence.
