Pixel 9, 9 Pro, and 9 Pro XL, has recently been benchmarked, revealing details about the new Tensor G4 chip

The upcoming Pixel 9 series, including the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, and 9 Pro XL, has recently been benchmarked, revealing details about the new Tensor G4 chip.

Benchmark results from Rozetked show that the Tensor G4 features a 1+3+4 core configuration, with the Cortex-X4 as the primary core. This is supported by three Cortex-A720 cores and four Cortex-A520 cores.

For comparison, the original Tensor and Tensor G2 chips had a 2+2+4 configuration, while the Tensor G3 used a 1+4+4 setup. The Tensor chip evolution is as follows:

  • The original Tensor had two Cortex-X1 cores at 2.8 GHz, two Cortex-A76 cores at 2.25 GHz, and four Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8 GHz.
  • The Tensor G2 featured two Cortex-X1 cores at 2.85 GHz, two Cortex-A78 cores at 2.35 GHz, and four Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8 GHz.
  • The Tensor G3 included one Cortex-X3 core at 2.91 GHz, four Cortex-A715 cores at 2.37 GHz, and four Cortex-A510 cores at 1.7 GHz.
  • The Tensor G4 has one Cortex-X4 core at 3.1 GHz, three Cortex-A720 cores at 2.6 GHz, and four Cortex-A520 cores at 1.95 GHz.

The Cortex-X4, which is also used in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, offers a 15% performance improvement and 40% better power efficiency compared to the previous generation. The Cortex-A720 brings a 20% boost in power efficiency, while the Cortex-A510 sees similar gains of 22%.

It’s important to note that the benchmarked devices are running pre-release software, and further optimizations are expected in the coming months. Consequently, the AnTuTu benchmark scores for the Tensor G4 in the Pixel 9 series should be viewed as preliminary:

  • The Pixel 8 scored 877,443 points.
  • The Pixel 9 (Tokay) achieved 1,016,167 points.
  • The Pixel 9 Pro (Caiman) reached 1,148,452 points.
  • The Pixel 9 Pro XL (Komodo) scored 1,176,410 points.

Looking ahead, the Tensor G5, expected to debut with the Pixel 10, is likely to be manufactured by TSMC, which could be a significant consideration for buyers of the Pixel 9 series. Previous leaks suggest the Tensor G4 will utilize Samsung’s latest 4nm process and Fan-out Wafer Level Packaging (FOWLP), aimed at improving heat management and power efficiency.
