Sony is reportedly in the works to release a PlayStation 5 Pro model, codenamed Trinity, which is said to boast a significantly more powerful GPU compared to existing PS5 models. According to leaked specifications obtained by YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead and corroborated by Tom Henderson at Insider Gaming, the PS5 Pro is slated for release during the holiday season of 2024.
The leaked technical overview document suggests that the PS5 Pro will feature a GPU with up to three times the performance for certain tasks compared to current PS5 models. It mentions 67 teraflops of 16-bit floating-point calculations, translating to approximately 33.5 teraflops of single-precision compute. This would result in a 45 percent rendering performance improvement over the base PS5, which has a 10.28-teraflop GPU. However, direct teraflop comparisons are complex due to changes in AMD’s RDNA architecture.
It's speculated that the PS5 Pro could upgrade from the AMD Radeon RX 6700 GPU found in the PS5 to something similar to the Radeon RX 7800 XT, offering enhanced performance for ray-traced games. The PS5 Pro may also deliver three times the ray tracing performance, with a boost of up to four times in certain scenarios.
Additional details suggest that the PS5 Pro will support a detachable disc drive like the recently redesigned PS5, along with system memory running at 576 GB/s, a 28 percent increase over the base PS5. Moreover, it may feature improved audio hardware capable of processing more effects. The PS5 Pro is expected to share the same CPU as the standard PS5 but offer a "High CPU Frequency Mode" for a 10 percent performance boost, albeit at the cost of a slight GPU slowdown.
Furthermore, leaked documents mention PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), a technology similar to Nvidia's DLSS or AMD's FSR, which utilizes machine learning for image upscaling. PSSR could facilitate upscaling to 8K resolutions in future iterations and enhance ray tracing performance on the rumored PS5 Pro hardware.
While the reliability of the leaks remains to be fully verified, reports suggest that Sony's first-party studios have been testing PS5 Pro devkits since September, with third parties gaining access in January. Henderson previously reported plans for a PS5 Pro with a target release date of November 2024, indicating that Sony is potentially on track to meet this timeline.
