Qualcomm recently unveiled its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset with impressive AI capabilities, including on-device generative AI tasks without requiring an internet connection. The chipset claims to handle tasks like writing emails and generating images using stable diffusion. It offers a significant speed boost in the CPU, GPU, and NPU departments.
In response, MediaTek introduced its Dimensity 9300 chipset, emphasizing a different architecture with one ultra-large core for performance and four efficiency cores. MediaTek claims early benchmark tests show better CPU and GPU performance compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, along with superior on-device Gen AI capabilities at 20 TOPS.
However, despite its capabilities, the Dimensity 9300 may not find its way into flagship smartphones in Western markets. MediaTek's flagship chips, such as the Dimensity 9200, have seen limited adoption in Western flagship phones, with only a few models featuring them. In 2023, only two phones with the Dimensity 9200 were tested, and MediaTek did not express optimism about the Dimensity 9300's adoption in Western-focused smartphones during its media pre-brief. In contrast, Qualcomm announced prominent brands like Xiaomi adopting the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in phones like the Xiaomi 14. This suggests a challenging competitive landscape for MediaTek in Western markets.
