Google Workspace Introduces 1080p High-Quality Video Streaming for Group Calls

Google is rolling out a new feature that allows Workspace subscribers to stream high-quality 1080p video feeds during group calls. This feature was initially introduced in April but was limited to one-on-one video calls. Now, Google is expanding its availability to group calls with three or more participants on the web.

To enable this feature, participants with Full HD webcams must accept a prompt that automatically appears on the join screen before the meeting begins. Once activated, a 1080p icon will appear in the upper right corner of the video box, confirming that the higher-quality video stream is active.

Participants in the meeting can view the high-resolution video if the user who enabled it is pinned or if they have a large enough screen to support the higher resolution.

Settings for sending and receiving high-quality video can be configured under "Settings > Video" on the web. Google Meet will also automatically adjust the video quality if network bandwidth becomes limited.

This new update is available to Workspace subscribers, including those on Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, and the Teaching and Learning Upgrade plans. Workspace Individual subscribers can also access this feature.

However, it's worth noting that Google One subscribers, who typically get access to certain Workspace features, are not included in this update. As a result, they will still only have access to 1080p video during one-on-one calls.

This enhancement in video quality is part of Google's ongoing effort to provide a seamless and high-quality experience for its Workspace customers during video conferencing and virtual meetings. It allows for crisper and clearer video, making group collaboration more efficient and engaging. The inclusion of this feature in various Workspace plans indicates Google's commitment to improving video conferencing for businesses, educators, and individual users.
