Google's second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices are currently experiencing significant issues

Users of Google's second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices are currently experiencing significant issues preventing them from casting content from their smartphones or tablets. This problem has been widely reported since March 10, 2025.

Nature of the Issue

Affected users encounter an "Untrusted device" error message stating that the device couldn't be verified, possibly due to outdated firmware. This error appears when attempting to cast content from apps like YouTube.

User Experiences

Many users have reported similar issues, sharing their experiences on platforms like Reddit. Common troubleshooting methods, such as restarting, factory resetting, reinstalling the Google Home app, clearing cache/data, and trying different networks, have not resolved the problem.

Google's Response

Google is aware of the issue and is actively working on a fix. Affected users are advised to await further updates from Google regarding a resolution.

This situation has raised concerns about the longevity and support for older Chromecast models, especially following the discontinuation of the original Chromecast in 2023. However, Google has not announced any plans to discontinue support for the second-generation Chromecast or Chromecast Audio devices.
