Google Maps Enhances Navigation and Discovery with Gemini AI-Powered Features

Google Maps is rolling out new features powered by Google’s Gemini AI model, which will bring enhanced navigation and discovery options to U.S. users. The update lets users ask for suggestions on things to do or places to visit, such as “things to do with friends at night,” and receive curated recommendations, like speakeasies or live music venues. These recommendations come with summaries based on user reviews, and Gemini can answer follow-up questions for specific details, like if a venue offers outdoor seating.

To improve navigation, Google Maps is adding features to display lanes, crosswalks, road signs, and which lane to stay in, especially helpful for complex roads with multiple lanes or exits. Travelers can also see options for exploring attractions, landmarks, and dining spots along their route. Upon arrival, users can locate nearby parking options, save their parking location, and get walking directions using Street View or AR navigation.

The update also brings real-time weather alerts for road disruptions like floods, unplowed snow, and low-visibility conditions. Additionally, Immersive View, which creates 3D models of destinations, is expanding to 150 cities, including new locations such as Brussels, Kyoto, and Frankfurt.

Google also announced Gemini integration for Waze, allowing users to report traffic incidents hands-free by speaking naturally into the app, enhancing real-time traffic updates and safety. These AI-powered improvements aim to keep Google Maps competitive against Apple Maps and other navigation services by integrating richer data and enhancing user experience.
