MicroSD cards may not be common in modern smartphones, but they remain essential for devices like drones, action cameras, and handheld consoles such as the Nintendo Switch. For these gadgets, having larger and faster microSD cards is always beneficial.
Samsung has introduced new Pro Plus and Evo Plus microSD cards with capacities reaching up to 1TB. Considering that an average Nintendo Switch game is around 10GB, a 1TB card could store approximately 90 games, though some larger titles like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition, which is nearly 40GB, will reduce that number.
These new Samsung Pro Plus microSD cards feature a 28nm controller, which is more power-efficient compared to the 55nm controllers in older cards. Additionally, the new controller supports Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) error correction code, enhancing the card’s durability by improving write-and-erase cycle reliability. The performance boost is also due to the use of 8th generation V-NAND technology.
The Pro Plus cards offer impressive speeds, with up to 180MB/s sequential read and up to 130MB/s sequential write speeds. Meanwhile, the Evo Plus cards are slightly slower, providing up to 160MB/s read and 120MB/s write speeds. Both card types are rated A2 for application storage, U3, and V30 for general file storage and 4K video recording.
Available in various sizes, including 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB, the Evo Plus model also includes a 64GB version. However, the 64GB card is significantly slower, with read speeds of 60MB/s and write speeds of 20MB/s, and it only carries A1/U1/V10 ratings. All cards come with a 10-year limited warranty and are designed to withstand water, high temperatures, X-rays, and magnetic fields.
