MediaTek, a prominent player in the semiconductor industry, has been making waves with its innovative chipsets. The MediaTek Dimensity 9300, launched in November last year, presented a unique design with four Cortex-X4 prime cores, deviating from the conventional approach. Skipping the little cores altogether, it utilized four Cortex-A720, bringing the core count to eight.
At the opening of a new office building, MediaTek CEO Cai Lixing celebrated the success of the Dimensity 9300 and highlighted the increasing importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in smartphones. Furthermore, the CEO tantalizingly teased the upcoming flagship chip, tentatively named "Dimensity 9400," slated for release in the fourth quarter of this year. Notably, this will mark MediaTek's first chip built on TSMC's 3nm node (N3E), a significant advancement from the older N4P node used for the Dimensity 9300.
While the official confirmation of the CPU configuration for the Dimensity 9400 is pending, early rumors suggest an intriguing setup. The highest clocked core is expected to be a new Cortex-X5, yet to be officially announced. The middle and bottom cores are anticipated to retain the configuration of 3x Cortex-X4 and 4x Cortex-A720 from the Dimensity 9300. Although specific clock speeds are yet to be disclosed, the shift to the N3E node signifies a notable leap in technological capabilities.
The chart reveals expectations for enhanced NPU performance in the Dimensity 9400, with a predicted 20%-50% boost in speed for Large Language Models like Llama2 7B. Additionally, a 15% improvement in image generation with Stable Diffusion v1.5 further underscores the chip's prowess in AI-related tasks.
Interestingly, reports suggest that MediaTek has entered into a partnership with Nvidia to develop a chipset featuring a GeForce GPU, deviating from the usual ARM Mali/Immortalis. This collaboration sets the stage for a compelling competition against the Exynos 2500, rumored to incorporate just one Cortex-X5 and an AMD-based GPU.
