Samsung Aims to Challenge Sony's Dominance in Smartphone Camera Sensor Market with On-Device AI Integration

Samsung is gearing up to challenge Sony's dominance in the smartphone camera sensor market by incorporating on-device artificial intelligence (AI) into its camera image sensors. While Sony currently holds a 54% market share, Samsung is the second-largest smartphone camera sensor brand with a 29% share. Samsung has introduced several advanced camera sensors, including its third 200MP camera sensor and the Zoom Anyplace technology, powered by AI, allowing simultaneous 4K video recording and zoom functionalities. 

The South Korean company aims to continue its innovation in camera sensors by incorporating more AI features, with a long-term vision to create sensors that can replicate human senses. Samsung's roadmap includes the development of camera sensors that can capture invisible elements by 2027.

At the System LSI Tech Day 2023 event in Silicon Valley, System LSI President Park Yong-in emphasized Samsung's goal of leading the "Proactive AI" era. This involves mastering Generative AI, high-performance algorithms and technologies, and long-range communication solutions. The camera sensor market has transitioned to a growth phase, driven by demand from various industries such as autonomous cars, the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, and Extended Reality (XR) devices. 

Samsung faces competition not only from Sony but also from SK Hynix, which has announced its own plans to incorporate AI processing chips into camera sensors. The use of AI accelerators in image sensors can enhance features like face and object recognition, lower latency, improve image quality, and reduce power consumption.

Samsung's move to integrate on-device AI into its camera sensors aligns with the broader trend in the tech industry, where AI is playing a pivotal role in improving the performance and capabilities of various devices.


Smartphone manufacturers are increasingly leveraging AI to enhance camera functionalities, enabling features such as scene recognition, improved low-light performance, and advanced computational photography. As companies invest in AI research and development, the competition in the smartphone camera sensor market is expected to intensify, leading to further innovation and advancements in mobile photography.
