Meta has introduced a new "Communities" feature on Messenger, expanding beyond its original implementation in WhatsApp

Meta has introduced a new "Communities" feature on Messenger, expanding beyond its original implementation in WhatsApp. This update allows users to join and participate in communities without the prerequisite of being part of a Facebook group. Initially launched on WhatsApp in 2022, the feature has now been extended to all Messenger users.

Previously, the creation of large communities with up to 5,000 members on Messenger required that participants be members of the same Facebook Group. This change simplifies the process, enabling more flexible and inclusive communication options. It is particularly beneficial for organizations, schools, and private groups looking for a more coordinated and structured way to interact.

Meta explains that the new Communities on Messenger are designed to connect people with shared interests. These communities are managed by admins and can be discovered and joined by anyone on Messenger. Unlike Facebook groups, these Messenger communities do not offer the same range of features. Since these are geared towards more public conversations, they adhere to different privacy guidelines than personal messages on Messenger, instead following privacy protocols akin to those in community chats linked to Facebook groups.

In related developments, Meta has also launched its AI chatbot, Meta AI, for WhatsApp business accounts in India and several other countries. This tool is designed to assist businesses in providing better customer service and exploring new products. The chatbot can also help businesses create ads on Facebook and Instagram. Alongside this, Meta has introduced its Verified program for WhatsApp business app users in countries including India, Brazil, Indonesia, and Colombia. Verified users enjoy enhanced account support and can use WhatsApp across multiple devices for their team members. They will also have a blue checkmark next to their business name on their WhatsApp Channel and custom WhatsApp page, signifying their verified status.

These updates represent Meta’s ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity and support for both personal and business users across its platforms, providing more robust and flexible tools for communication and engagement.
