At the I/O 2024 conference last month, Google announced that its generative AI chatbot, Gemini, had exited the beta phase for Google Messages. One of the notable updates includes a new double floating action button (FAB) design, enhancing how users interact with Gemini in the app.

In the updated Google Messages app, users will notice a larger "Start chat" FAB, now accompanied by a smaller Gemini FAB situated just above it. This addition of the Gemini FAB may seem visually misaligned at first, especially when viewed alongside the rectangular "Start chat" button. However, the design aligns correctly as users scroll through the app, maintaining visual consistency.
This double FAB design is reminiscent of a similar feature in Google Drive, where the "New" FAB is paired with a shortcut for quick scanning. In Google Drive, the scan camera icon disappears upon scrolling, a subtle detail that maintains a clean interface. Similarly, in Google Messages, the smaller Gemini FAB provides quick access to the AI chatbot, ensuring that users can easily initiate conversations with Gemini.
Tapping the Gemini FAB in Google Messages directly opens a conversation with the Gemini chatbot. This feature ensures that users have persistent and immediate access to Gemini, which is powered by Gemini 1.0 Pro. This version of the chatbot is optimized to deliver concise and relevant responses, enhancing the messaging experience. Additionally, Google has broadened the availability of this feature by removing the previous requirement that it be used exclusively on Pixel and Samsung devices.
For now, the new Gemini FAB design is available to some beta users of Google Messages. Looking forward, Google plans to expand Gemini's presence across its services. In Gmail for Android and iOS, a Gemini icon will soon appear in the top-right corner, providing access to a Q&A feature. On the desktop web version of Gmail, users will be able to access the Gemini capabilities via a sparkle icon that opens a side panel for interactions with the chatbot.
These updates highlight Google's commitment to integrating its generative AI technologies seamlessly into its suite of apps, providing users with enhanced functionalities and more intuitive ways to interact with AI.
