Microsoft has made a significant announcement regarding the future of Android app support within its ecosystem, specifically for Windows 11. After initially unveiling plans to integrate Android apps into Windows 11 through Amazon’s Appstore nearly three years ago, the tech giant has now revealed its decision to deprecate the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA), effective March 5th, 2025.
In a recent support document, Microsoft stated that it would be terminating support for WSA, which will consequently lead to the discontinuation of the Amazon Appstore on Windows and all associated applications and games that rely on WSA. Despite this forthcoming change, users currently utilizing Android apps from the Amazon Appstore will retain access to these apps beyond the support cutoff date. However, the ability to download new apps will be disabled once Microsoft phases out its Android subsystem next year. Additionally, as of March 6th, 2025, Windows 11 users will no longer be able to search for the Amazon Appstore or related Android apps directly from the Microsoft Store.
This move by Microsoft may come as a surprise, especially considering the ongoing efforts to enhance and update the Windows Subsystem for Android in recent years. However, the decision to discontinue support for Android apps on Windows 11 reflects a shift in strategy, potentially driven by factors such as the absence of official access to Google's Play Store and the evolving landscape of app distribution.
In response to Microsoft's announcement, Amazon has pledged to collaborate closely to ensure a seamless transition for developers and customers of the Amazon Appstore on Windows 11. Despite the discontinuation of new app submissions targeting Windows 11 after March 5, 2024, developers will still be able to submit app updates until the Amazon Appstore on Windows 11 is fully phased out.
Initially positioned as a competitive response to Apple's integration of iOS apps on macOS through its M1 chips, Android apps on Windows 11 represented a bold attempt by Microsoft to bridge the gap between mobile and desktop ecosystems. However, without access to Google's Play Store, the experience was somewhat limited, which likely contributed to Microsoft's decision to discontinue support for Android apps on its platform altogether.
