Gboard introduces Scan Text feature, simplifying text scanning directly from the keyboard app, enhancing user efficiency and convenience

Gboard, the default keyboard app on most Android phones, continues to impress with its frequent updates and innovative features. Among the recent additions, the Scan Text option stands out as a particularly useful enhancement, now gradually rolling out to Gboard users in select regions. This feature, which made its debut with Gboard beta version 13.6 back in November, allows users to scan text using their device's camera.

The inclusion of the Scan Text option is a welcome addition for Gboard users, especially those who frequently utilize text scanning services like Google Lens. Upon activation, the feature transforms the bottom area of the screen into a viewfinder, accompanied by a shutter key to capture an image. Users can then tap on the screen to select and copy either partial or entire text, subsequently pasting it onto the desired text field using the Insert button.

Although Google is not the first to implement this functionality in a keyboard app – Samsung Keyboard has offered a similar text scanning feature since One UI 5 – its integration into Gboard streamlines the text scanning process. With Scan Text, users no longer need to switch between apps, such as Google Lens, to scan images containing text, enhancing efficiency and convenience.

Despite its widespread appearance, some users may not yet have access to the Scan Text feature, as its rollout is gradual and may vary by region. However, those who do have access can benefit from its seamless integration into the Gboard experience.

In addition to Scan Text, the Gboard team is also working on further improvements, including enhancements to its AI proofreading tool. This tool, available on the beta channel for several months, enables users to selectively proofread specific portions of text rather than entire paragraphs. While this feature has yet to reach all users, its development underscores Gboard's commitment to refining its offerings and delivering a superior typing experience.
