Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon XR2+ Gen2 Platform to Enhance XR Experiences

Qualcomm has introduced the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen2 platform, designed to enhance extended reality (XR) experiences in devices. The new chip supports 4.3K spatial computing at 90 frames per second, offering improved graphics processing for more realistic and detailed mixed reality (MR) and virtual reality (VR) environments. In comparison to the previous generation chip, the Plus variant features a higher frequency graphics processing unit (GPU) that provides enhanced XR experiences.

According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen2 boasts a 15% higher GPU frequency and a 20% higher CPU frequency compared to the non-plus version. The chip supports 12 or more concurrent cameras with powerful on-device artificial intelligence (AI), allowing devices powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen2 to efficiently track users, their movements, and the surrounding environment. This capability facilitates seamless navigation and immersive experiences that merge physical and digital spaces.

Hugo Swart, Vice President and General Manager of XR at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., stated, "Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 unlocks 4.3K resolution, which will take XR productivity and entertainment to the next level by bringing spectacularly clear visuals to use cases such as room-scale screens, life-size overlays, and virtual desktops." Qualcomm mentioned that Samsung and Google would be leveraging the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen2 to deliver XR experiences.

Inkang Song, Vice President and Head of Technology Strategy Team at Samsung Electronics, expressed excitement about collaborating with Qualcomm Technologies and Google to revolutionize the mobile industry. Shahram Izadi, Vice President of AR at Google, looks forward to continuing collaboration to enable new immersive and spatial XR experiences within the Android ecosystem using the capabilities of Snapdragon XR2+ Gen2.
