Google's Bard AI chatbot has expanded its capabilities beyond web searches. It can now scan Gmail, Docs, and Drive to help users find specific information within their emails and documents. The new integration, known as extensions, enables users to ask Bard to locate and summarize email contents or highlight key points in stored documents. While concerns about privacy and data usage may arise due to accessing personal emails and documents, Google assures users that the information won't be used to train Bard's public model and won't be seen by human reviewers. The feature is currently available only in English.
To use this feature, users can direct Bard to search within Gmail by preface questions with @mail or ask specific questions like "Check my email for information related to my upcoming flight." Google has also expanded Bard's reach with connections to Maps, YouTube, and Google Flights. This allows users to ask Bard for real-time flight information, nearby attractions, or surface YouTube videos on a specific topic. Google plans to expand Bard's integrations to more products within Google and with external partners.
In addition to these updates, Google is introducing a new way to verify Bard's answers through the "Google It" button. This feature allows users to see whether Bard's responses align with information verified by Google Search. Highlighting verified information in green and unvalidated answers in orange, users can mouse over sentences to get more context on accuracy. Furthermore, users can now continue conversations with Bard based on shared links, enabling a more seamless interaction. These improvements come as part of Google's ongoing efforts to enhance Bard's capabilities, which initially started with its introduction in February.
