Xiaomi CEO Announces HyperOS, a New Evolution of MIUI, and its Debut on Xiaomi 14 Series

Xiaomi's CEO, Lei Jun, has made a significant announcement regarding the introduction of HyperOS. This new operating system is poised to have its official debut on the Xiaomi 14 series and is positioned as the natural evolution of MIUI. The series is expected to launch in China later this year, with a global release planned for the early weeks of 2024.

Notably, HyperOS is still rooted in the Android Open Source Project, but it will incorporate elements from Vela, Xiaomi's IoT platform. Lei Jun's announcement on Weibo showcased the company's vision of placing "people in the center of an ecosystem," emphasizing seamless connectivity with other individuals, automobiles, and smart homes. He expressed pride in the remarkable growth of Xiaomi's software division, which has evolved from a small team of "a few engineers" to a massive workforce of nearly 5,000 individuals.

The journey to HyperOS commenced in 2014, aligning with the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT). Xiaomi officially embarked on this path in 2017, focusing on developing an extensive ecosystem for devices and applications. Their ultimate aim is to connect "tens of billions of devices" in the future, starting with the introduction of the Xiaomi 14 series.

Xiaomi enthusiasts can expect future Xiaomi smartphones to come pre-loaded with HyperOS. Additionally, older flagship and premium devices will receive over-the-air (OTA) updates to adopt the new operating system. It's worth noting that while Xiaomi is pioneering exciting developments, their track record for updating older devices with the latest software has room for improvement.
