Intel Unveils Sierra Forest and Granite Rapids Xeon Processors: New Architecture and Performance Boosts

Intel recently made waves at Hot Chips 2023 by unveiling its highly anticipated Xeon processors, Sierra Forest and Granite Rapids. These cutting-edge processors introduce an innovative architecture that leverages dual I/O chiplets on the 'Intel 7' process while incorporating different compute cores on the 'Intel 3' process. This thoughtful design opens the door to various product configurations, all stemming from the same foundational structure.

Sierra Forest, powered by Sierra Glen E-cores, is tailored for efficiency, ensuring optimal power performance. On the other hand, Granite Rapids takes advantage of Redwood Cove P-cores to deliver remarkable levels of processing power, emphasizing performance-driven tasks. Notably, both cores boast dedicated memory controllers that significantly enhance memory bandwidth, a crucial factor in modern computing.

These processors offer an all-in-one solution by integrating I/O and providing robust support for PCIe 5.0 and CXL 2.0. Their self-booting capabilities contribute to seamless user experiences, streamlining the startup process and enabling swift access to vital resources. The debut of Sierra Forest is slated for early 2024, with Granite Rapids closely following suit, marking a significant stride forward in Intel's ongoing commitment to advancing processing technology.
